Police Officer Missing After Students Attack KCSE Examination Monitoring Team
A police officer has gone missing following a violent confrontation involving students at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Kisii County, where a multi-agency team had been investigating suspected cheating during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The incident happened on Thursday, November 5, at around 10am after officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and National Intelligence Service (NIS) visited the school to investigate reports of examination irregularities.
The team had been dispatched after a KNEC official overseeing examinations at the institution reportedly raised concerns about possible malpractice in the administration of the national examinations.
During their visit, the investigators reportedly discovered a laptop hidden behind the school’s administration offices. The discovery prompted further concerns about possible examination irregularities and led the team to seek additional assistance from DCI officers based in Nyamache.
However, before the detectives arrived, students allegedly turned against the officials conducting the monitoring exercise. The situation reportedly escalated into violence, with police officers and KNEC officials coming under attack.
During the confrontation, students allegedly seized a vehicle belonging to one of the police officers and extensively damaged it. Personal belongings kept inside the vehicle were also reportedly stolen.
The most worrying development was the disappearance of one of the officers who was allegedly seriously assaulted during the incident. Police have since launched efforts to establish his whereabouts, although the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear.
DCI detectives from Nyamache have visited the school as investigations continue into the suspected examination malpractice, the attack on the multi-agency team, destruction of property and the missing officer.
The incident comes at a time when examination centres across the country are under heightened scrutiny, with KNEC deploying monitoring teams to prevent cheating, unauthorised access to examination materials and other forms of examination irregularities.
Authorities are now expected to establish what happened during the confrontation and determine the circumstances surrounding the officer’s disappearance as investigations proceed.
