Phones and Chargers:Safaricom Announces November 13 Deadline for Kenyans to Surrender Unused Gadgets

Safaricom has announced a nationwide collection exercise targeting Kenyans with old mobile phones, chargers, earphones and other unused electronic gadgets, giving members of the public just days to hand over the items.

In a public announcement on Thursday, November 6, the telecommunications company urged Kenyans to check their homes for electronic accessories they no longer use and take them to any Safaricom retail shop across the country.

The exercise is part of the company’s efforts to promote responsible electronic waste management and reduce environmental pollution.

Safaricom said the collection drive would run until Friday, November 13, 2026, giving Kenyans a one-week window to surrender their unused gadgets.

Got old phones, chargers or earphones you no longer use? Give your small electronic waste a second life by dropping it off at any Safaricom retail shops across the country,” the company announced.

However, the company clarified an important detail for Kenyans planning to participate: there will be no monetary compensation for the gadgets surrendered.

This means customers should not expect to receive money regardless of the age, condition or value of the electronic devices they hand over.

Safaricom explained that the collected items would be handed to licensed recycling partners, including the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre (WEEE Centre) and Warmtech, for proper dismantling and processing.

Through the process, reusable materials such as metals and plastics can be recovered while potentially harmful electronic components are handled safely.

The company has been running electronic waste management initiatives since 2012 as part of its broader environmental conservation programme.

Safaricom has previously reported collecting thousands of tonnes of electronic waste through its various collection channels.

The latest announcement comes amid growing concerns about the improper disposal of electronic waste, which can release hazardous substances into the environment when dumped or burned.

Kenyans wishing to participate have been encouraged to visit their nearest Safaricom retail shop before November 13 and surrender their unused electronic accessories.
