Nigeria Have Set A FIFA Record That No Country Has Ever Achieved After Defeating Brazil
Nigeria’s Flamingos have achieved an impressive milestone at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, becoming the first national team to have five different players receive the Player of the Match award across six games in one edition of the competition.
According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Nigerian side secured the historic record after defeating Brazil 3-1 in their semi-final clash on Wednesday, November 4. The victory also earned the Flamingos their first-ever place in the final of the tournament.
The achievement demonstrates the quality and strength of the Nigerian squad, with several players making significant contributions at different stages of the competition. Rather than depending on a particular individual, the team has benefited from impressive performances across different positions.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was the first Nigerian player to receive the individual recognition following the Flamingos’ 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico. Kanyinsola Yusuf later earned the award after Nigeria recorded a 3-1 win against defending champions North Korea.
Oluebube Umejiaku became the third player to receive the honour after helping the team defeat Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter, where she also made her mark on the scoresheet.
Favour Nkwocha was the fourth recipient, earning recognition for her contribution to Nigeria’s important 1-0 quarter-final victory over Venezuela, which secured their qualification for the semi-finals.
Awawu Bashiru completed the historic list after delivering an outstanding performance against Brazil. The forward scored twice in the second half, helping the Flamingos secure a convincing 3-1 victory and advance to the final.
The record reflects the collective effort within the Nigerian team and the ability of different players to produce decisive performances when required. It also underlines the depth of talent available to the coaching crew.
With Japan standing between Nigeria and the championship, the Flamingos will return to action on Saturday, November 7, hoping to win their first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title and finish their remarkable campaign on a high note.
