Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Wants Historic 1957 Photo On Ghanaian Banknotes

A proposal to feature one of Ghana’s most historic independence photographs on selected banknotes has emerged ahead of the country’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is asking the Bank of Ghana to replace the existing Big Six image on some banknote denominations with the iconic photograph of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957.

The proposal was contained in a statement issued by the management of the Memorial Park on Friday, November 6, 2026. It is linked to the Bank of Ghana’s proposed introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes, which is expected to provide an opportunity to recognise important personalities, events and milestones in the country’s history.

The Park explained that the Big Six played a significant role in Ghana’s independence struggle and deserved lasting recognition. However, it believes the country’s currency could reflect a wider range of historical experiences by featuring other defining moments in the nation’s journey.

According to the statement, banknotes serve a purpose beyond facilitating financial transactions. They also represent national identity, heritage and collective memory, making the images printed on them an important way of telling Ghana’s story.

The Memorial Park believes the photograph of Nkrumah announcing independence would be a fitting addition because it captures the moment Ghana broke free from colonial rule and became a sovereign nation.

It also described March 6, 1957, as a turning point not only for Ghana but for the wider African liberation struggle. The institution argued that few events in the country’s history carry comparable significance in shaping its freedom and national identity.

The proposed change would not necessarily remove the Big Six from all Ghanaian currency. Rather, the Park is recommending that their image be replaced on selected denominations, allowing the independence declaration photograph to share space in the country’s banknote history.

With Ghana preparing to mark seven decades of independence in 2027, the institution considers the proposed inclusion a lasting tribute to the historic moment that established the country as an independent state.

The statement was signed by Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, PhD, Acting Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The proposal is an appeal to the Bank of Ghana; the statement does not indicate that the central bank has approved the suggested redesign.
