Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Makes Big Proposal to Replace Big Six Images on Ghanaian Cedis
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has proposed replacing the image of Ghana’s Big Six on selected banknotes with the historic photograph of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring the country’s independence on March 6, 1957.
The proposal, announced in a statement on Friday, November 6, 2026, seeks to expand the historical representation on Ghana’s currency by highlighting other significant events that have shaped the country’s history.
According to the Park’s management, the initiative is in line with the Bank of Ghana’s proposed introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes.
The management acknowledged the historical contributions of the Big Six, whose images currently appear on almost all Ghanaian banknotes in recognition of their role in the country’s independence movement.
However, it believes the proposed currency series offers an opportunity to showcase other important personalities and defining moments in Ghana’s history without diminishing the legacy of the six nationalists.
It noted that banknotes represent more than their monetary value, serving as important symbols of a country’s identity, cultural heritage and collective history.
The Park considers the photograph of Dr Nkrumah announcing Ghana’s independence a suitable image for selected denominations because of its historical significance and representation of the country’s freedom and sovereignty.
The photograph captures one of the most defining moments in Ghana’s history, when Dr Nkrumah declared independence on March 6, 1957, marking the country’s emergence from colonial rule.
The occasion also represented a major milestone in the broader African liberation movement, inspiring other countries across the continent in their struggles for independence.
The Park’s management described the declaration as the culmination of Ghana’s independence campaign and a historic turning point that established the country as a sovereign nation.
It further argued that few events in Ghana’s history carry the same significance as the attainment of independence.
The proposed inclusion of the photograph is expected to carry additional historical significance as Ghana prepares to mark 70 years of independence in 2027.
The Memorial Park believes featuring the image on selected banknotes would provide a lasting tribute to the historic achievement and preserve the memory of the moment Ghana became an independent state.
It added that the proposed Heritage Series offers the Bank of Ghana an opportunity to recognise important individuals, historical events and milestones that have contributed to the country’s development.
