Kakamega Man Breaks Down After Graduating a Year After Doha-Based Mum’s Death
Gregory Wandati celebrated his graduation from Kenya Highlands University in Kericho on Friday, November 6, 2026, but the achievement came with mixed emotions as he remembered the mother who had sacrificed to see him through university.
Wandati dedicated his degree to his late mother, who had been working in Doha and financed his entire university education before her death.
His mother’s passing came around the time of a previous graduation ceremony she had eagerly looked forward to attending. Wandati, who had been a member of the university choir during that event, was unable to take part as he dealt with the loss.
The ceremony had been particularly important to his mother, who had supported his education and hoped to witness the day her son would graduate. Sadly, she did not live to see him receive his qualification.
Speaking about the milestone, Wandati said it was painful that the graduation his mother had anticipated so much happened without her.
“It’s painful that the graduation she hyped for, she is not there to see her son graduating,” he told TUKO, dedicating the achievement to “my queen in heaven.”
Beyond paying tribute to her, the graduate said he was determined to continue the responsibilities his mother had carried while she was alive.
She had been building a bungalow back home before her death, leaving the family with an unfinished project that represented her plans for their future.
Wandati vowed to complete the house as part of his commitment to keeping her dream alive. He also pledged to take care of his siblings, stepping in to support the family after losing the woman who had provided for them.
His story reflects the sacrifices made by parents who work away from home to educate their children and give them better opportunities. For Wandati, the degree represents years of effort and his mother’s unwavering support.
Although she was absent from the graduation ceremony, he chose to honour her by dedicating the achievement to the woman whose sacrifices made it possible.
