Ghana to Wean Itself Off Half of Its Vaccine Supply by 2030, Mahama Declares
President John Mahama has announced that Ghana currently procures approximately 50 percent of its vaccines, but the country is expected to procure its own vaccines by 2030, marking a major shift toward self-sufficiency in public health.
Speaking on the country’s vaccine production ambitions, the President explained that the government is investing in local manufacturing capacity to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen Ghana’s resilience against future health emergencies. He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the dangers of relying heavily on external sources for essential medicines and vaccines, and that Ghana must now take control of its own pharmaceutical future. President Mahama announces that while Ghana currently procures approximately 50 percent of its vaccines, the country is expected to procure its own vaccines by 2030.
The President indicated that the plan involves partnerships with development partners, private sector investors, and research institutions to establish and expand vaccine manufacturing facilities in the country. He stressed that local production will not only secure supply but also create jobs, build scientific expertise, and position Ghana as a leader in health innovation on the African continent.
He further noted that the government is committed to providing the necessary policy support and incentives to attract investment into the vaccine and pharmaceutical industry, adding that regulatory frameworks will be strengthened to ensure that locally produced vaccines meet international standards.
Health experts have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a bold and necessary step toward achieving universal health coverage and improving access to affordable vaccines for all Ghanaians. They noted that local manufacturing will help the country respond more swiftly to outbreaks and reduce the foreign exchange burden of importing vaccines.
The President urged stakeholders across the health sector to support the initiative, reiterating that the target of procuring Ghana’s own vaccines by 2030 is achievable with sustained commitment and collaboration. He assured Ghanaians that his administration will prioritise the health and well-being of citizens as the country works toward vaccine independence.
