Mahama Vows To End No-Bed Syndrome, Opens Military Hospital To Public

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system, with a focus on ending the No-Bed Syndrome, expanding emergency care and improving access to quality healthcare.

He spoke at the 68th Annual General Conference of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).

At the heart of his plan is a new Integrated Bed Management and Referral Coordination System. The system will show hospitals in real time where beds are available across the country, so emergency patients are not turned away or left on benches while beds sit empty elsewhere.

President Mahama said it will end the painful situation where families are forced to move from hospital to hospital in search of a bed.

He also announced the expansion of emergency departments in major teaching hospitals. The expansion is expected to increase space, equipment and staff, and reduce waiting times for accident victims and critically ill patients.

In another major move, he announced the opening of the Ghana Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital to the public. The facility, previously reserved mainly for military personnel, will now serve all Ghanaians in need of critical care.

The President highlighted ongoing investments in health infrastructure, increased recruitment and equitable deployment of health professionals. He said doctors, nurses and other workers will be posted fairly, including to rural and underserved communities, and promised improved conditions of service.

He also pointed to Free Primary Healthcare, the uncapped National Health Insurance Scheme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as MahamaCares. He said they will remove financial barriers to care and support patients with chronic and expensive conditions like cancer, kidney failure and heart disease.

President Mahama pledged to work with the GMA and other stakeholders to build a responsive, accessible and sustainable health system that puts patients at the centre of care.
