DA Draws A Red Line Against MK Party & EFF, KZN Leader Rules Out Coalition With Zuma Party

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has opened the door to coalition negotiations following the 2026 Local Government Elections but has firmly ruled out working with the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), setting the stage for potentially difficult political negotiations in KwaZulu-Natal.

DA KwaZulu-Natal leader Sithembiso Ngema says the party is willing to engage in coalition discussions with other political formations but will not consider entering government with the MK Party or EFF.

Ngema reportedly justified the party’s position by questioning whether the two political organisations have sufficiently clear programmes for governing municipalities.

His comments could significantly influence the coalition landscape in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly as parties assess their electoral performance and explore possible partnerships to secure control of hung municipalities.

The MK Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, has emerged as a major political force in the province challenging the traditional dominance of established parties.

Meanwhile, the EFF continues to position itself as an alternative political movement, advocating for radical economic transformation and changes to South Africa’s economic and political structures.

For Ngema the ability of potential coalition partners to present credible governing programmes appears to be a key consideration in determining which political organisations the DA is prepared to work with.

The party’s willingness to negotiate nevertheless leaves room for possible cooperation with other formations that share its approach to municipal governance and administration.

The developments come as KwaZulu-Natal faces an important political transition following a closely contested election, with parties seeking to translate their electoral support into functioning municipal administrations.

The DA decision to exclude the MK Party and EFF could narrow the available options in some municipalities and complicate efforts to establish stable administrations.

As negotiations unfold political leaders will face pressure to put governing arrangements ahead of party rivalries and ensure that residents are not left paying the price for political deadlock.
