AFCON Qualification Battle Begins: Mosimane Names Bafana Stars To Face Kenya Twice

Mosimane Announces Final Bafana Squad As Mbokazi Returns For Crucial Kenya Double-Header

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has announced his final 27-man squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying double-header against Kenya, with Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s return and Siyanda Ndlovu’s surprise inclusion among the major talking points.

The squad announcement was made on Thursday, November 5, as South Africa prepares for two important encounters against the Harambee Stars, coached by former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy.

Chicago Fire defender Mbokazi returns to the national team after missing the previous international camp through injury. His availability provides Mosimane with another important defensive option ahead of the November fixtures.

Another notable inclusion is Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Siyanda Ndlovu, who has earned his place following impressive performances for the Brazilians despite initially missing out on the preliminary squad.

However, there is disappointment for experienced midfielder Themba Zwane, who has been left out amid concerns about his limited playing time at club level.

Captain Ronwen Williams headlines the goalkeeping department alongside Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine and Sundowns’ Ricardo Goss.

The defensive options include Aubrey Modiba, Samukele Kabini, Fawaaz Basadien, Thapelo Morena, Olwethu Makhanya, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mbokazi.

In midfield, Mosimane has selected Teboho Mokoena, Lebohang Maboe, Sphephelo Sithole, Bathusi Aubaas, Brooklyn Poggenpoel and Thalente Mbatha.

The attacking department features Lyle Foster, Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis, Iqraam Rayners, Tshepang Moremi, Cassius Mailula, Luther Singh, Tashreeq Matthews and Ndlovu.

South Africa heads into the fixtures after collecting six points from its opening two AFCON qualifiers, beating Guinea 2-1 before recording an emphatic 5-0 victory over Eritrea.

The first meeting against Kenya will take place at Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday, November 13, at 18:00, before Bafana travel to Nairobi for the return fixture on November 17.

With Kenya already qualified as co-hosts, the matches offer both teams an opportunity to strengthen their preparations for the continental tournament.
