Which Party Ticket? Winnie Odinga’s Silence Raises Questions Ahead of Nairobi Senate Race.
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has left Kenyans guessing about her political direction after failing to announce the party ticket she intends to use in her 2027 Nairobi Senate bid.
Winnie declared her intention to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat on October 15, 2026, during a memorial service marking the first anniversary of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death.
At the time, she explained that she had identified an opportunity in Nairobi as current Senator Edwin Sifuna pursued higher political ambitions.
However, weeks after making the announcement, Winnie has yet to publicly commit to either the mainstream Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) or the Linda Mwananchi faction associated with Sifuna.
Her political position became a subject of discussion after she skipped two major political events over the weekend: the unveiling of Linda Mwananchi’s headquarters in Lavington and the ODM rally at Jacaranda Grounds.
Her absence from both gatherings raised fresh questions about which political camp she intends to work with.
On Monday, November 2, Winnie further fuelled speculation after conducting an online poll asking Kenyans to advise her on the political direction she should take.
She listed four options: ODM/broad-based government, Linda Mwananchi, Fight for ODM, and Relax/Other.
Linda Mwananchi reportedly attracted 72 per cent of the votes at the time of the poll, while ODM/broad-based and Fight for ODM each received 11 per cent.
Winnie also shared a cryptic video teasing a major announcement expected in 2027, without revealing whether it concerned her political party or campaign plans.
The uncertainty comes as the Nairobi Senate race attracts several aspirants, including nominated Senator Crystal Asige and Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o.
Winnie also faces a complicated political situation within her family, with her brother Raila Odinga Junior publicly backing Jalang’o’s Senate ambitions.
With the 2027 elections approaching, her eventual party choice could influence both the Nairobi Senate contest and the wider political negotiations within ODM and the opposition.
