Supreme Court Awards GH¢500,000 to Man After 24 Years on Death Row, Rejects GH¢2.86M Claim
The Supreme Court of Ghana has granted Abu Shaibu GH¢500,000 in compensation for spending almost 24 years on death row before his conviction was overturned. The court, however, dismissed his claim for GH¢2.86 million.
According to reports, the justices considered the fact that Shaibu waited about 21 years before taking action to challenge his conviction. This delay reportedly influenced their assessment of the compensation he deserved.
The court also found that he had not provided sufficient documentary evidence to substantiate his claim for income he could have earned during his imprisonment. As a result, his demand for GH¢2.86 million was not accepted.
The ruling has brought renewed focus to the challenges surrounding compensation for wrongful imprisonment and the consequences of prolonged detention.
While the GH¢500,000 award offers Shaibu some financial redress, it is considerably lower than the amount he requested. His experience also raises broader concerns about the impact of wrongful convictions and the responsibility of the justice system to safeguard individual rights.
