Sign The Same Bill You Shouted For In Opposition — Afenyo-Markin Dares Mahama On Anti-LGBTQ Law

The Minority Leader is not mincing words.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin says President John Dramani Mahama must sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill exactly as it was passed by the previous Parliament — no amendments, no watering down, no new grammar.

Speaking at a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ahead of Parliament’s resumption, Afenyo-Markin said the NDC must be consistent.

“When you were in opposition, you shouted that Nana Akufo-Addo must sign the bill. You said you will never support any changes. Now you are in power, you want to amend it?”

According to the Minority, the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill was passed by the 8th Parliament in 2024 with bipartisan support. The NDC MPs at that time insisted on the original, tough version and accused the NPP government of trying to delay it.

Now, the Minority says, the NDC government has brought a new 2025 version with softened provisions — a clear departure from their 2024 position.

On June 4, 2026, he already issued a strong statement demanding that the original 2024 bill be restored and transmitted to President Mahama for assent without any modification.

His position today is the same: If you believed LGBTQ+ is against Ghanaian family values yesterday, you must still believe it today. You cannot change the law because you now sit in Jubilee House.

Ghanaians are watching, he says. You cannot campaign against LGBTQ+ in opposition and then dilute the same law when you have the power to sign it.

The question is simple: Will President Mahama sign the same bill his party defended in opposition, or will he sign a weaker version?

The Minority says Ghanaians want the original bill — nothing more, nothing less.
