NPP Members Begin ‘Yɛ Gye Yɛ Sika’ Demonstration Against Ablakwa
Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have gathered in Accra to begin their planned “Yɛ Gye Yɛ Sika” demonstration, aimed at protesting against the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over alleged financial irregularities and other concerns.
The demonstration, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026, is expected to bring together party supporters, young people and other concerned individuals demanding accountability over issues surrounding the government’s handling of certain financial transactions.
The protest follows concerns raised by the NPP over reported discrepancies in payments and expenditure relating to Ghana’s evacuation exercise in South Africa. The party has questioned the figures associated with the exercise and called for greater transparency from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The demonstrators are also expected to raise concerns about the welfare of people affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage, particularly residents of North Tongu who were displaced by the disaster. Some of the affected residents are expected to use the demonstration to demand the release of funds intended to support their recovery and rebuild structures destroyed by the spillage.
According to the NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser, Emmanuel Senyo Amekpulenu, the demonstration will provide an opportunity for affected residents and other concerned groups to demand answers from the government.
The planned procession is expected to begin at Villaggio before moving to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the protesters will make their first stop. The demonstrators will subsequently proceed to the Presidency, where the NPP National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, is expected to present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
The organisers have indicated that the Ghana Police Service has been notified about the protest and is expected to provide security throughout the exercise.
Mr Amekpulenu has also called for an independent audit to examine the reported financial discrepancies and establish whether any wrongdoing occurred. He maintained that investigations should determine responsibility rather than rushing to declare any individual guilty.
The demonstration forms part of growing political pressure on the Foreign Affairs Ministry to provide explanations concerning the issues raised by the opposition party.
As the protest continues, attention will be on the petition to be presented to the Presidency and the response from the government.
The demonstration is expected to intensify public discussion about accountability, transparency in public spending and the government’s responsibility to address concerns raised by citizens.
