Kitale: Drama As Prominent Politician Accused of Plotting Ruto’s Attack Is Arrested

Tension erupted after a politician accused of planning an attack on President William Ruto was arrested in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County. His detention sparked outrage among leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi Movement, who demanded his immediate release.

Obed Mwale Mahanga, the Trans Nzoia County Assembly Deputy Speaker and Matisi Ward MCA, was arrested by armed police officers on Monday, November 2.He was later transferred to Kapenguria Police Station in West Pokot County, where he remained in custody ahead of his court appearance.

Mwale was presented before the Kapenguria Law Courts on Tuesday, November 3. However, details of the court proceedings were not immediately available.

His arrest attracted strong criticism from politicians affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi Movement, who accused the authorities of targeting him because of his political activities.

In a statement, the movement’s head of communication, Pauline Njoroge, condemned the arrest, claiming it was intended to intimidate Mwale and silence his political voice. The group said police had accused the MCA of financing criminal activities and mobilizing groups to cause chaos during political rallies. However, it dismissed the accusations as politically motivated.

According to reports surrounding his arrest, Mwale is being investigated over claims that he organized groups to disrupt Kenya Kwanza political rallies in Trans Nzoia County.

He is also accused of participating in a plan to block President Ruto’s motorcade during his visit to Kitale on Friday, October 16.

A social media account associated with Governor George Natembeya confirmed his detention at Kapenguria Police Station. It also revealed that more than 100 lawyers affiliated with Linda Mwananchi had volunteered to represent him in court. However, the allegations against Mwale had not been proven in court at the time of reporting.

The movement insisted that his arrest would not derail its political plans ahead of the 2027 general election.

Mwale is seeking the Trans Nzoia senatorial seat, where he is expected to challenge incumbent Senator Allan Chesang.
