Kenyans React After Gachagua Responds to Matiang’i and Muturi in Fresh Political Exchange
Kenyans have been reacting after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua responded to Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi following their criticism of his approach to opposition politics.
The exchange has attracted attention as divisions emerge within the United Opposition over leadership, political influence and the strategy for challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The disagreement intensified after Matiang’i warned that what he described as Gachagua’s arrogance and majoritarian politics could undermine opposition unity.
Muturi also accused the former Deputy President of political bullying and double-speak, arguing that no individual or political community could claim ownership of the opposition movement.
However, Gachagua pushed back against the criticism during an address at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri on Tuesday, November 3.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader maintained that opposition leaders seeking the presidency must demonstrate their ability to mobilise voters rather than depend on meetings, interviews and political discussions.
He insisted that winning elections required numbers and grassroots mobilisation, adding that political leaders should focus on looking for votes instead of criticising one another.
Gachagua also defended his proposed alliance involving Mt Kenya, Ukambani and Western Kenya, arguing that electoral numbers were important in determining the opposition’s strategy.
His response has added another layer to the ongoing debate about who should lead the opposition and how the different political formations should work together.
The disagreement has also raised questions about whether the opposition principals can settle their differences before settling on a joint presidential candidate.
As the 2027 elections approach, the public exchange between the three leaders continues to attract attention, with Kenyans following developments within the opposition closely.
