It could be that, he was mistaken for a rival gang member – NYPD chief

According to by Ghbase on Tuesday 3 November 2026, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has provided an update on investigations into the killing of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong, revealing that detectives have obtained clear images of three teenagers suspected of being involved in the incident.

According to the NYPD, investigators believe the case is progressing in the right direction as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the teenager’s death. Police have also indicated that they are considering three possible motives behind the attack.

Speaking to the media, the NYPD Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, disclosed that investigators have been examining different angles of the case and have kept Javits’ family informed about developments.

He explained that one of the possibilities being investigated is bullying, adding that detectives are working with the Department of Education to obtain relevant information that could help establish whether the teenager had experienced bullying before the incident.

Kenny further revealed that investigators are considering the possibility of a robbery that went wrong. The third theory being examined is that Javits may have been mistaken for a member of a rival gang.

“We know there’s been a bullying aspect, and we’re trying to confirm that with the Department of Education to get information. We are also looking at the possibility of a robbery gone bad, and the last aspect will be that he was mistaken for a rival gang member,” he told reporters.

Javits Frimpong was reportedly on his way to school on October 30, 2026, when he was shot in the Bronx, New York. His death has attracted widespread attention, particularly among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, with many expressing sadness and calling for justice.

The incident has also renewed concerns about youth violence, school safety and the security of teenagers in communities across New York.

Meanwhile, the NYPD says investigations are ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify the suspects.

As of the time of publication, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident. Police are continuing their investigations, while Javits’ family and members of the Ghanaian community await further developments and justice for the deceased teenager.
