Irvin Khoza Threatens To Take Soweto Derby Away From Johannesburg As Durban Emerges

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has raised the possibility of moving future Soweto Derby matches away from Johannesburg, suggesting that Durban could become an alternative venue if ongoing logistical challenges surrounding major football fixtures are not addressed.

Khoza expressed his frustration over difficulties experienced when organising high-profile matches in Johannesburg, questioning why similar problems do not appear to occur when major football events are staged in Durban.

Speaking about the matter, the Pirates chairman pointed to previous matches involving Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns that were successfully hosted in Durban without the same reported complications.

“We went to Durban for the final of Pirates and Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. Nothing happened of the sort. Why here? There are certain role players who are not playing their part. If they don’t make up the act, we’re going to name and shame them,” Khoza said.

His comments suggest growing frustration with certain stakeholders responsible for ensuring that major football fixtures run smoothly, particularly regarding stadium arrangements, security and other logistical requirements.

Khoza further indicated that Orlando Pirates could consider taking future Soweto Derby fixtures to Durban rather than continuing to use Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium.

“Maybe the future will be that instead of going to FNB Stadium, let’s go to Durban,” he added.

The Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is one of the biggest football spectacles in South Africa, attracting thousands of supporters and significant attention from football fans across the country.

FNB Stadium in Johannesburg has traditionally served as the home venue for many of these highly anticipated encounters.

However, Khoza’s latest remarks have opened the possibility of a major venue change if the challenges he highlighted remain unresolved.

For now, Durban remains a proposed alternative rather than a confirmed destination for the next Soweto Derby.
