Stationary SAPS Nyala Kills N3 Taxi Driver Near Germistons Rand Airport Interchange — Probe Launched

A Toyota Quantum taxi driver died just after midnight on Wednesday, 3 November 2026, on the N3 southbound freeway between the Elands and Rand Airport interchanges in Germiston. His taxi slammed into the back of a stationary SAPS Nyala armoured carrier.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services rescuers found the driver trapped in the crushed cab. Paramedics waited while a specialist crew used hydraulic cutters to get him out, and the job dragged on into the early hours. He was declared dead at the scene. His name has not been released yet, because his family still needs to be told.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomvula Dlamini confirmed that investigators from the Germiston cluster have opened a formal inquiry. Police closed two lanes, forensic teams measured tyre marks and debris, and southbound traffic was sent on a detour.

Early findings suggest the Nyala had a mechanical failure and was sitting still in the middle of the road when the taxi hit it from behind at speed. Drivers reportedly saw no warning triangles or emergency lights. Investigators are still checking whether any reflective warning gear was set up further back on the road.

The Nyala driver walked away without a scratch. The taxi driver did not.

The image that stuck with onlookers was the big armoured vehicle, barely scratched, with its blue light still flashing in the dark, while firefighters knelt beside the wrecked taxi right next to it. Two vehicles, two very different outcomes.

It is still unclear whether the Nyala crew radioed a breakdown warning or whether other drivers were ever alerted. The taxi driver’s family will want answers about why a working armoured vehicle was sitting unlit on a major freeway in the middle of the night. Investigators now have that question, and South Africans are watching closely.
