“Ghana Will Not Ban Cryptocurrency” – Sam George Declares as Ghana Ranks 29th Globally

Ghana has been ranked 29th among countries worldwide in cryptocurrency adoption, with approximately 3.1 million people reportedly participating in the digital asset market, according to a report by GHOne TV on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The ranking reflects the growing interest in cryptocurrencies among Ghanaians, with individuals increasingly exploring digital assets for investment, financial transactions and other economic activities. The development also highlights the expanding role of digital financial services in the country’s economy.

Reacting to the report, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, popularly known as Sam George, disclosed that the government has no plans to prohibit cryptocurrency activities in Ghana. Instead, he explained that authorities intend to introduce regulations to guide the industry and ensure that its operations are properly supervised.

The Minister’s position suggests that the government recognises the growing participation of citizens in the cryptocurrency market and considers regulation a more suitable approach than an outright ban.

A regulatory framework could establish clearer requirements for businesses and individuals operating in the sector. It could also help address challenges associated with digital asset transactions, including fraud, financial losses and the misuse of cryptocurrencies.

With millions of people reportedly involved in the market, the need for appropriate oversight has become an important issue for policymakers. Clear regulations could help define the responsibilities of cryptocurrency operators while providing users with better information about the risks involved.

Sam George’s remarks indicate that Ghana intends to accommodate developments in the digital economy while establishing rules to guide cryptocurrency activities.

The government’s proposed approach reflects an effort to balance technological innovation and public participation with financial supervision and consumer protection.
