Ghana Audit Service Recovers Over GH¢18 Billion and Prevents GH¢11.7 Billion in Wrongful Payments
Ghana’s Audit Service has reportedly recovered more than GH¢18 billion in public funds between 2022 and 2026, while also preventing wrongful payments amounting to GH¢11.7 billion in 2025.
The figures were disclosed by Auditor-General Dr Pamela Graham, who highlighted the institution’s efforts to protect public resources, strengthen financial accountability and prevent the misuse of government funds.
According to the Auditor-General, the recovery of more than GH¢18 billion over the four-year period reflects the work undertaken by the Audit Service to identify financial irregularities and ensure that public institutions account for funds entrusted to them.
The prevention of GH¢11.7 billion in wrongful payments in 2025 was also presented as a major achievement in the institution’s efforts to safeguard the country’s finances.
Wrongful payments can arise from irregular financial transactions, unsupported claims, procurement breaches and other activities that do not comply with established financial regulations. Identifying such payments before they are made can help government institutions avoid unnecessary financial losses.
The Audit Service plays an important role in Ghana’s public financial management system by examining the accounts of government institutions and assessing whether public funds are being used in accordance with the law.
Its findings also help identify weaknesses in financial administration and provide recommendations to improve accountability across public institutions.
The reported recoveries and prevented payments highlight the importance of regular audits in ensuring that public resources are properly managed.
However, financial accountability also requires effective follow-up after audit findings are published. Recovering funds, addressing irregularities and ensuring that responsible individuals or institutions are held accountable remain important parts of protecting public resources.
