GH¢16.4 Million Missing But She Came to ‘Suonono’ — The Joke That Exposed The NPP Demo
That is what happened this morning at the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout in Accra.
Hundreds of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters gathered for a demonstration they called “Yɛ Gye Yɛn Sika” — to wit, “We want our money”.
The party said the protest is to demand accountability from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over money spent to evacuate Ghanaians from South Africa. Government evacuated 1,964 Ghanaians between May and September following xenophobic attacks, but the NPP youth wing says there is a GH¢16.4 million discrepancy in the spending.
It was meant to be a serious day. Placards, shouting, demanding dismissal of the Minister.
Her answer, with a straight face and a smile: “I’m not doing anything, we’re just here to suonono.”
Suonono. In Ghanaian street language, it means loitering. Doing nothing. Just hanging around. Wasting time.
In one sentence, she killed the whole message.
If you are at a protest to demand GH¢16.4 million of public money, you cannot be there to “suonono.” A protest is not a funeral where you go to show face. You are there because you are angry. You are there because you want answers.
But this is the problem with our party politics in Ghana.
Many people who join these demonstrations don’t know why they are there. They were called by their organizer, given a T-shirt, put on a bus, and told to come and shout. When you ask them the real issue, they have no idea.
How can you demand accountability when you don’t even know what you are accounting for?
The video is already trending because it is funny, but it is also embarrassing. It gives the other side a perfect excuse to say, “Look, they are not serious. They have no message. They just came to make noise at Tetteh Quarshie.”
The NPP Youth Organizer called on all supporters and Ghanaians to join to demand greater accountability over public funds. That is a serious call. You need serious people to carry it.
If you show up to a demonstration about taxpayers’ money and your reason is “suonono,” you are not helping your party. You are mocking the very suffering of the 1,964 Ghanaians who had to run for their lives from South Africa.
Next time, if you want to suonono, stay at home. Let those who know why they are angry go and shout.
