GCB Bank is taking its customer engagement strategy beyond traditional banking, using fitness, entertainment and wellness activities to build deeper relationships with customers in an increasingly competitive financial services industry.
The Bank demonstrated this renewed approach with its maiden Aerobics Fiesta, held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Saturday, November 2026, bringing together customers, employees and other participants for a day of exercise, health awareness and entertainment.
The initiative, which combined aerobics, yoga, health screenings and live musical performances, formed part of the grand finale of GCB Bank’s 2026 Customer Service Month celebration under the theme ‘The Extra Mile’.
With popular Ghanaian music group Dope Nation providing entertainment, the event offered a refreshing departure from conventional customer engagement activities, giving the Bank an opportunity to connect with its clientele outside the familiar environment of banking halls and financial transactions.
At a time when customers increasingly demand more than competitive interest rates, convenient banking services and reliable digital platforms, GCB Bank is exploring a different approach to strengthening customer loyalty.
The maiden Aerobics Fiesta reflected the Bank’s determination to make customer relationships more personal by creating experiences that connect with customers’ everyday lives.
Participants enjoyed a combination of physical activities and wellness sessions, including aerobics and yoga, while health screenings provided an opportunity to pay attention to their personal well-being.
The presence of families and individuals from different backgrounds also gave the gathering a community-oriented atmosphere, allowing customers and Bank employees to interact in a relaxed setting.
Rather than limiting customer engagement to product promotions and routine banking services, GCB Bank used the occasion to demonstrate that its relationship with customers could extend into activities that promote healthier lifestyles and social connections.
GCB Bank’s Chief Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Officer, Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, explained that the initiative was deliberately designed to create a more personal connection between the Bank and its customers.
She said the Bank wanted customers to recognise the importance of prioritising their health while enjoying an opportunity to engage with the institution beyond financial services.
“With this aerobics, we are trying to engage with our customers on a more personal level. We are also encouraging them to take their wellness seriously.”
Her remarks highlight an important dimension of the Bank’s customer engagement strategy, which recognises that customer satisfaction is influenced by experiences beyond the products and services offered by financial institutions.
The initiative also provided an opportunity for customers to interact directly with management and employees without the usual formalities associated with banking transactions.
According to Ms Ofori-Dwumfuo, the maiden edition had opened opportunities for the Bank to introduce more engaging activities in subsequent years.
She expressed optimism that the Aerobics Fiesta would become a permanent feature of GCB Bank’s annual calendar, suggesting that the initiative could develop into a major platform for customer engagement.
Beyond the excitement surrounding the event, GCB Bank is positioning customer centricity as a central pillar of its corporate strategy.
Ms Ofori-Dwumfuo stressed that understanding customers’ needs and placing their expectations at the centre of business decisions remained fundamental to the Bank’s operations.
“Customer centricity on its own is actually a pillar of our strategy as a bank and where we are going. We understand that we put the customers first with everything.”
The statement comes at a time when competition within Ghana’s banking industry continues to place pressure on financial institutions to distinguish themselves through service quality, convenience and customer experience.
Customers now have increasingly varied expectations, with digital banking, transaction efficiency, accessibility and responsive customer support playing important roles in determining their choice of financial institution.
Against this background, GCB Bank’s decision to introduce wellness-focused activities represents an additional dimension of its efforts to maintain stronger relationships with customers.
The Bank also intends to continue reviewing its products, services and operational processes to ensure that its offerings respond to changing customer expectations.
Established in 1953, GCB Bank has witnessed several transformations in Ghana’s financial services industry, evolving alongside changing customer needs and technological developments.
Its maiden Aerobics Fiesta signals another attempt to broaden the way it interacts with the people and communities it serves.
The event also gave practical expression to the theme of this year’s Customer Service Month, ‘The Extra Mile’, by taking customer engagement outside the traditional banking environment.
While the long-term impact of the initiative on customer loyalty and satisfaction will depend on its consistency and the Bank’s broader service delivery performance, the decision to make wellness part of its engagement strategy offers an interesting direction.
The prospect of making the fiesta an annual event could also create opportunities for GCB Bank to expand its community engagement activities and introduce additional experiences that bring customers closer to the institution.
Ultimately, GCB Bank is seeking to build a relationship with customers that goes beyond deposits, withdrawals, loans and digital transactions. Its maiden Aerobics Fiesta represents an attempt to make the banking experience more personal, meaningful and connected to the everyday lives of the people it serves.
As the Bank looks towards future editions, the challenge will be to sustain the enthusiasm generated by the maiden celebration while ensuring that the promise of putting customers first is consistently reflected in the quality of its everyday banking services.
