Gachagua Puts Justin Muturi on the Spot, Questions His Ability to Challenge Ruto Across Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has challenged former Attorney General Justin Muturi over his political influence, questioning how he intends to help remove President William Ruto from power when he allegedly struggles to defeat him in his own polling station.

Speaking during a political engagement, Gachagua directed his remarks at Muturi, who hails from Mbeere, Embu County, questioning his ability to mobilise voters beyond his home area.

“My brother from Mbeere, if you cannot defeat him at your polling station, how can you defeat him across the whole of Kenya?” Gachagua posed.

The former Deputy President’s remarks appeared to challenge Muturi’s political strength and his contribution to the opposition’s efforts to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua suggested that political ambitions at the national level should be accompanied by demonstrable support at the grassroots, particularly in leaders’ home constituencies.

His comments come amid growing political discussions among opposition figures seeking to establish a united front against President Ruto.

Muturi, who previously served as Attorney General, has been among the political figures who have expressed criticism of the current administration following his departure from government.

The exchange also reflects the difficult conversations surrounding the formation of an opposition coalition, with leaders expected to demonstrate their influence and ability to mobilise supporters across different regions.

Gachagua has continued to engage political leaders from different parts of the country as he seeks to consolidate support ahead of the next general election.

The former Deputy President has repeatedly called for cooperation among opposition politicians, although his latest remarks indicate that questions about individual political influence remain part of the ongoing discussions.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the relationship between opposition leaders and their ability to work together will remain an important part of Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
