Gachagua Finally Responds to Matiangi and Muturi Over Their Early Remarks

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has challenged his United Opposition colleagues Fred Matiang’i and Justin Muturi to intensify their grassroots campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at his Wamunyoro home on Tuesday, November 3, the former deputy president accused some opposition leaders of relying on press conferences, social media and meetings in hotels instead of engaging voters directly.

Gachagua argued that leaders seeking the presidency must actively mobilise supporters rather than expect Kenyans to vote for them based on policy proposals and public statements.

“No vote can be found in a hotel. No vote can be found on television. Votes must be actively sought,” he said.

He estimated that Kenya would have approximately 26 million registered voters in 2027, arguing that a presidential candidate would need at least 16 million votes to secure a comfortable victory.

Gachagua cited recent rallies in Kajiado North, Juja and Kikuyu, where he said he had engaged voters as part of his mobilisation efforts. He also pointed to his party’s performance in the Ol Kalou by-election, claiming it secured 35,000 votes compared with significantly lower figures recorded by rival parties.

His remarks came amid growing disagreements within the United Opposition after Matiang’i accused him of focusing too much on ethnic voting patterns, while Muturi criticised his approach as political bullying.

However, Gachagua dismissed the accusations, maintaining that encouraging colleagues to campaign was not arrogance or intimidation.

He also questioned the ability of some leaders to mobilise voters in their home constituencies, arguing that opposition figures needed to demonstrate their support bases before seeking national leadership.

The former deputy president said he intended to work with leaders capable of consolidating votes and urged Muturi to promote his party and build political support.

Gachagua further maintained that he would pursue candidates for various elective positions, including governors, senators, MPs and MCAs, as the opposition prepares for the 2027 elections.
