Fresh Details Emerge After KDF Soldier Is Killed in Ruiru Gunfight

Police in Kiambu County are investigating a deadly confrontation in Ruiru that left a man identified as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier dead and another suspect in custody.

The deceased, identified as 33-year-old Munene Antony, died while receiving treatment at Ruiru Level 4 Hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries during an exchange of fire with police officers.

The incident reportedly happened at around 1 am on November 1, 2026, in the Covo area near Magunas, Kahawa Sukari.

According to the police account, officers attached to Kahawa Sukari Police Station were conducting their routine night patrol when they received information from a member of the public about two armed men allegedly threatening residents.

The officers reportedly traced the suspects and ordered them to surrender. However, one of the men allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire, forcing the officers to respond.

During the confrontation, Munene was shot in the chest and right hand. He was taken to Ruiru Level 4 Hospital in serious condition but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police subsequently recovered a Jericho pistol loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition. Two spent cartridges were also collected at the scene.

Investigators reportedly established the deceased’s identity after recovering a KDF identity card bearing the name Munene Antony during a search.

The surviving suspect was arrested and taken into police custody as investigations continued.

One of the issues detectives are pursuing concerns the ownership of the recovered firearm.

During preliminary questioning, the surviving suspect allegedly told investigators that the pistol belonged to his brother, whom he described as a police officer.

The claim is yet to be established, with investigators expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the weapon’s ownership and use.

Senior police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and collected exhibits to assist with investigations.

Meanwhile, Munene’s body was transferred to General Kago Mortuary in Thika, where it was preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Police have said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The incident raises questions about the events that led to the confrontation, the identity of the people involved and the ownership of the firearm recovered by officers.

Further information from investigators and the relevant authorities is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the death.
