Europe In Shock: South African Coaches Rulani Mokwena & Steve Barker Do The Impossible Overseas

Rulani Mokwena and Steve Barker are turning heads across Africa and making South African coaching look bigger than ever. Mokwena is doing big things at Egyptian giants Pyramids FC, while Barker is flying with Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC. Both men have started their campaigns in style, and suddenly they are being talked about in the same breath as Europe’s top clubs.

Bayern Munich, AS Roma and a few other heavyweights have been drawing plenty of attention for staying unbeaten early in the 2026/27 season. Now Mokwena and Barker are sharing that spotlight. Mokwena has reportedly led Pyramids to 12 straight wins since arriving at the start of the season, and he also helped the club book a spot in the CAF Champions League group stages. Barker, who moved from Stellenbosch FC to Simba, has also made a flying start, with eight consecutive league wins and a big aggregate victory over Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto that secured Simba’s own group-stage place.

Let’s keep it real, though. Comparing African league form with Europe’s elite is not exactly apples to apples. Bayern, Roma, Lazio and Borussia Dortmund are playing in very different conditions and at a very different level of competition. Still, what Mokwena and Barker are doing takes consistency, sharp tactics and the nerve to handle pressure, and that is something to celebrate.

The real test starts now. A hot start is exciting, but the true measure of success is staying strong when the fixtures get tougher and the expectations pile higher. Barker faces a tough CAF Champions League group that includes South African giants Orlando Pirates and Moroccan side RS Berkane, and Mokwena will be under pressure to help Pyramids defend their continental status.

Either way, these two are a proud advert for South African coaching. Can they turn these hot starts into silverware? Mzansi, what do you think? Drop your prediction below and tell us whether Mokwena or Barker is more likely to bring home a trophy first!
