Charity Ngilu Explains Why Gachagua Will Be Key to Building a United Opposition Ahead of 2027

Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has weighed in on the evolving opposition realignments after holding a meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, expressing confidence in his commitment to building a united and inclusive political alternative to President William Ruto’s administration.

Ngilu’s latest remarks have added another significant dimension to the ongoing political engagements among opposition figures seeking to establish a common political front ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Her assessment suggests that discussions around opposition unity are increasingly focusing on cooperation, inclusivity and the need for a shared political framework.

The meeting reportedly took place at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

It also provided an opportunity for the former Kitui governor to share her political experience, particularly her involvement in the formation of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which brought together opposition leaders and ended KANU’s 24-year rule in the 2002 General Election.

Ngilu played a significant role in the political negotiations that brought together the late President Mwai Kibaki, the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa and other opposition figures.

Her experience in coalition-building could offer useful lessons to the current opposition as it navigates competing interests, leadership ambitions and negotiations over a possible joint presidential candidate.

The engagement comes amid a series of consultations between Gachagua and prominent opposition figures, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, as discussions over a possible united opposition arrangement gather momentum.

Ngilu’s emphasis on inclusivity also places the question of political representation at the centre of the emerging opposition negotiations.

She believes that any alternative administration must accommodate capable leaders from different political backgrounds and communities rather than concentrate authority in a few individuals.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, the challenge facing opposition leaders will be translating their public declarations of unity into concrete agreements on leadership, governance and political cooperation.
