BoG Governor Gives Ghanaians Christmas Exchange Rate Assurance as Cedi Outlook Brightens

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has expressed confidence in the performance of the Ghanaian cedi, assuring the public of a favourable exchange-rate environment during the upcoming Christmas festivities.

His remarks come as businesses, importers, traders and consumers closely monitor developments in the foreign exchange market ahead of the festive season, when demand for foreign currencies often increases to support imports and commercial transactions.

Dr Asiama said the central bank remained optimistic about the local currency’s outlook and expected prevailing economic conditions to support exchange-rate stability in the coming months.

“We are confident in the performance of the cedi, and Ghanaians should expect a favourable exchange-rate environment during the Christmas period,” Dr Asiama assured.

The statement is expected to provide some reassurance to economic operators concerned about possible depreciation and its impact on the prices of goods and services.

The cedi’s performance remains important to Ghana’s economy because exchange-rate fluctuations can influence inflation, fuel prices, transportation costs and the general cost of living. A relatively stable currency could also help import-dependent businesses manage their expenses and plan their operations with greater certainty.

However, sustaining exchange-rate stability requires consistent monetary policy, effective foreign exchange management, improved export earnings and stronger economic fundamentals.

The Bank of Ghana is expected to continue monitoring developments in the currency market and implementing measures aimed at supporting the cedi.

Dr Asiama’s assurance will be closely watched by businesses and market participants as Christmas approaches. For households already dealing with rising living costs, a stable exchange rate could help reduce additional pressure on their spending during the festive period.

Attention will now turn to whether the central bank’s optimism will translate into sustained stability in the foreign exchange market.
