Big men pressuring me to contest again – Okyere Baafi makes U-turn to seek re-election
New Juaben South Member of Parliament (MP) Michael Okyere Baafi has disclosed that influential individuals and senior party figures are mounting pressure on him to reconsider his decision not to contest the next parliamentary elections.
The former Deputy Minister said several prominent people had approached him, asking him to remain in the race, but he was yet to make a final decision.
“Some big men have approached me and are asking me to contest again. They believe I should continue, but I have told my supporters and well-wishers to give me some time to think about it,” he said in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
Okyere Baafi had announced in late 2025 that he would not seek re-election, citing the increasing monetisation of politics and the practice of vote buying.
He had expressed concern about the financial demands associated with elections, indicating that he would rather leave Parliament than continue participating in a political system where money increasingly influences the electoral process.
Despite his earlier position, the MP remains confident about his political strength in New Juaben South, insisting that he has no serious electoral rival if he decides to contest.
“No one can defeat me in New Juaben South unless I decide not to contest,” he reportedly said.
He has asked supporters and well-wishers to give him time as he considers the calls to seek another term.
