Bad News For Amakhosi? FC Lorient Reportedly Eyes Chiefs Defensive Star

French Club FC Lorient Eye Rushwin Dortley As Kaizer Chiefs Face Potential Transfer Battle

Naturena – Kaizer Chiefs could face an important transfer decision in 2027, with French club FC Lorient reportedly showing strong interest in defender Rushwin Dortley.

The 24-year-old South African centre-back has allegedly attracted the attention of the Ligue 1 outfit, which is said to be considering an approach to Amakhosi when the next year begins.

According to reports circulating in South African football circles, Lorient are monitoring Dortley’s situation and could open discussions with Kaizer Chiefs in 2027 as they look to strengthen their defensive department.

Although the reported interest has generated excitement among Chiefs supporters, there is currently no official confirmation that the French club has made an offer or entered formal negotiations. The potential transfer therefore remains a developing story.

The reported interest comes at an important moment in Dortley’s career. The defender recently returned to competitive action after spending approximately 18 months on the sidelines because of a serious knee injury that required two operations.

His comeback arrived during Chiefs’ Carling Knockout Cup round-of-16 encounter against TS Galaxy on 27 October 2026. Fernando Da Cruz handed him a starting opportunity, and the defender played an important role as Amakhosi secured an impressive 3-0 victory at FNB Stadium.

It was a significant moment for a player who had not featured for the first team since March 2025.

Da Cruz was particularly pleased with Dortley’s return and highlighted the qualities that make him an important option in the Chiefs defence.

The coach praised his technical ability, understanding of space, capacity to break opposition lines and strength in aerial challenges. He also admitted that the team had missed those qualities during the defender’s lengthy absence.

Dortley’s performances before his injury had also helped him establish himself as one of South Africa’s promising defensive talents, earning opportunities with Bafana Bafana.

A possible move to France would represent another major step in the defender’s career. Playing in European football could expose him to a different tactical environment and provide an opportunity to develop further at a higher level.

However, any potential transfer would depend on several factors, including Lorient’s willingness to make a formal approach, Kaizer Chiefs’ position and the player’s own ambitions.

Chiefs originally signed Dortley from Cape Town Spurs in July 2024 on a three-year contract with a further one-year option. His contractual situation will therefore be an important consideration should genuine negotiations begin.

For Amakhosi, losing a talented defender shortly after his return from injury would be a significant decision, particularly as the club continues building its squad under Da Cruz.

For now, supporters will be hoping Dortley can regain full match fitness and establish himself as a regular member of the starting team.
