Why Is Pirates Boss Defending Arch-Rivals Kaizer Chiefs Like This

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has delivered a strong message about Kaizer Chiefs’ chances of competing for the Betway Premiership title, insisting that Amakhosi should not be written off despite their recent defeat in the Soweto Derby.

The Pirates mentor made the remarks after his side secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over their traditional rivals at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026. Despite claiming the bragging rights, Ouaddou was generous in his assessment of Chiefs, praising their technical team and the quality of their young players.

His comments come at a time when pressure continues to surround the Naturena-based club as supporters wait for consistent performances and improved results under head coach Fernando da Cruz.

Speaking after the derby, Ouaddou made it clear that he believes Chiefs are moving in the right direction and deserve sufficient time to develop their style of play.

“Seeing the game from outside, this technical team of Kaizer Chiefs is doing a great job,” Ouaddou said.

He also stressed the importance of allowing the coaching staff to implement their football philosophy, adding that the club has a promising squad capable of competing at a high level.

“These guys at Chiefs have a very good team with very good young players. In my opinion, they’re on the right path, and we don’t have to rule them out of the title race. This is a big club with big fans, and this technical team is doing a great job,” he added.

The remarks are particularly noteworthy because they came from the coach of Chiefs’ biggest domestic rivals. Rather than focusing solely on Pirates’ victory, Ouaddou acknowledged the potential within the Amakhosi squad and the work being done by their coaching staff.

The Soweto Derby produced an intense contest, with Chiefs showing promising signs during the first half before Pirates improved after the break.

Kaizer Chiefs created opportunities to take control of the match but struggled to turn their chances into enough goals to secure a positive result.

Pirates took advantage of the situation, with Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi finding the net to secure a 2-1 victory. Pule Mmodi scored for Chiefs, but his effort was not enough to prevent Amakhosi from suffering defeat.

The result gave Pirates an important boost as they continued their campaign, while Chiefs were left to reflect on missed opportunities.

Although Ouaddou believes Chiefs should remain in the title conversation, the club will need greater consistency and improved finishing to strengthen its position in the league.

For Fernando da Cruz and his technical team, the challenge will be to turn encouraging performances into victories while continuing to develop the younger players in the squad.

Ouaddou’s message is clear: Kaizer Chiefs remain a major force in South African football, and their title ambitions should not be dismissed prematurely.
