Zuma Dares Authorities to Arrest Him

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has revealed that he received information suggesting that authorities could arrest him in the near future. However, he insists that the possibility of being detained does not frighten him, saying he has already experienced imprisonment.

Zuma made the remarks during an appearance on the KZN Tonight Podcast on Tuesday evening. Referring to his 2021 detention at Estcourt Correctional Centre, he indicated that he would not resist arrest if authorities decided to take him into custody again.

The former president did not reveal who provided the information about his possible arrest or identify the law enforcement agency he believes could be planning to detain him.

Meanwhile, South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe reportedly said the police had no public statement regarding any possible arrest warrant involving Zuma.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) also declined to provide further information. Its spokesperson, Mthunzi Mhaga, said the organisation would not comment on operational matters at this stage.

Zuma’s comments bring renewed attention to his previous imprisonment in July 2021. He was sentenced to 15 months behind bars after the Constitutional Court found him guilty of contempt of court for refusing to comply with an order requiring him to appear before the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.

He was imprisoned at Estcourt Correctional Centre but was later released on medical parole, a decision that generated considerable public debate and criticism from various oversight bodies and legal experts.

As of Wednesday morning, there had been no confirmed arrest, and authorities had not publicly announced any new charges that would explain Zuma’s latest comments.

His statements have therefore raised questions about the information he claims to have received. It also remains unclear whether his remarks point to a genuine legal development or are connected to the ongoing political tensions surrounding him and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party.

For now, neither the police nor the NPA has confirmed that arrangements are being made to arrest the former president.
