UPDATED LOG: Sundowns Back on Top as Pirates Go 11 Points Clear of Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns have returned to the top of the Betway Premiership standings following an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign, with the defending champions once again demonstrating their determination to remain among South African football’s dominant forces.

The Brazilians currently occupy first place with 26 points from 10 matches, having recorded eight victories and two draws without suffering a defeat. Their impressive performances have also been reflected in their attacking and defensive statistics, with 27 goals scored and only nine conceded.

However, Orlando Pirates are applying significant pressure on Sundowns in the title race. The Buccaneers occupy second position with 25 points from nine matches, just one point behind the Tshwane giants despite having played one game fewer. Pirates have also won eight matches and drawn once, remaining unbeaten while scoring 21 goals and conceding only two.

Their remarkable defensive record highlights the progress made under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and places them in a strong position to challenge for the league title.

AmaZulu are also enjoying an encouraging campaign, sitting third with 22 points from nine matches. Usuthu have registered seven victories, one draw and one defeat, keeping themselves firmly in contention for a top-three finish.

Milford occupy fourth position with 18 points from 10 matches, while Kaizer Chiefs are fifth on 14 points after nine games. Amakhosi have managed three victories, five draws and one defeat, leaving them 11 points behind Pirates and 12 behind Sundowns. Their inconsistent results mean they will need a significant improvement to challenge for the leading positions.

At the opposite end of the standings, Richards Bay are experiencing a difficult campaign. They remain without a victory after nine matches, collecting just three points through three draws and six defeats.

With Sundowns and Pirates setting an impressive early pace, the title race is shaping up to be an exciting contest. AmaZulu remain within touching distance, while Chiefs must rediscover consistency if they hope to close the growing gap.
