Pirates, Chiefs and Sundowns Fans Get Important Message from PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza
Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has called on football clubs and supporters across South Africa to participate in the country’s 2026 Local Government Elections, urging citizens to turn out in large numbers when voting takes place.
Khoza made the appeal on Monday, 2 November, during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit to the PSL headquarters in Parktown, Johannesburg. His message was directed at football supporters across the country, with a particular call for all 32 PSL clubs and their fans to take part in the democratic process.
The appeal comes as special voting gets underway ahead of the main election day on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
Khoza believes that citizens should not only complain about conditions in their communities but also use their votes to influence decisions about local leadership and service delivery.
Speaking during the engagement, he stressed the importance of voting, particularly when communities expect improvements to public facilities and infrastructure.
“It’s very important to vote because you cannot complain about facilities not being upgraded and not make it a point to vote,” Khoza said.
He added that a strong turnout would give the voting process greater credibility and strengthen democracy.
The PSL chairman also indicated that he would be among those casting their ballots, encouraging football supporters to follow his example.
President Ramaphosa used the visit to reinforce the importance of taking part in the elections. He said South Africans have a responsibility to help determine the future of their municipalities.
The President argued that residents can influence the direction, performance and future of local government by participating in elections.
The engagement brought together two influential figures from South African public life, using football’s national following to draw attention to an important civic responsibility.
Local Government Elections have a direct impact on everyday life. Municipal councils are responsible for important services such as water provision, sanitation, refuse removal, local roads and electricity distribution.
The decisions made by elected representatives can affect households and businesses in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban and other communities.
For ordinary South Africans facing service delivery concerns, the elections provide an opportunity to choose representatives and hold municipal leadership accountable.
According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), special voting is scheduled for 2 and 3 November, while the main election takes place on 4 November. The Commission has approved more than 2.65 million special vote applications for this election.
Khoza’s appeal highlights the influence football can have beyond the pitch. With supporters connected to clubs across the country, the PSL chairman is encouraging the football community to participate in shaping the future of their communities.
Ultimately, the decision belongs to individual voters, who can make their choices freely and independently at the ballot box.
