Truphena Muthoni Announces Ambitious Plan to Plant 1 Billion Trees in 24 Hours
Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has announced plans to lead an ambitious tree-planting initiative targeting one billion trees across Kenya within 24 hours in a bid to set a new world record.
The proposed challenge is scheduled for April 22, 2027, to coincide with World Earth Day. The initiative will also mark the launch of a nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at mobilising Kenyans to participate in environmental conservation.
Muthoni announced the plans in a Facebook video shared on November 1, 2026, alongside Kenyan content creator and amateur boxer Mbavu Destroyer and an Australian environmentalist involved in the initiative.
The Australian environmentalist said the project was designed to bring together participants in an unprecedented exercise that would see more trees planted in one day than any previous individual achievement.
He explained that the planned activity would also introduce a countrywide tree-planting day, encouraging communities across Kenya to take part in restoring the environment.
Muthoni confirmed that organisers were targeting one billion trees within the 24-hour period, expressing confidence in Kenya’s capacity to host the challenge.
She noted that the country had increasingly become associated with environmental conservation and climate justice initiatives, making it an appropriate location for the proposed world-record attempt.
The announcement adds to Muthoni’s growing list of environmental campaigns that have attracted attention both locally and internationally.
In February 2026, she announced plans to plant 150,000 mangrove seedlings within one hour in Kwale County. The initiative was intended to promote ocean conservation and protect marine ecosystems, including endangered marine life such as turtles. Members of the Kenya Scouts Association were among those involved in the exercise.
In March 2026, she also announced plans for another record attempt in Brazil, where she was expected to hug 1,172 trees within one hour while engaging with Indigenous communities.
Muthoni first attracted widespread international attention through her endurance-based tree-hugging challenges. In February 2025, she hugged a tree for 48 consecutive hours at Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi.
She subsequently extended the achievement by completing a 72-hour tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri County between December 8 and 11, 2025.
