Today’s Headlines: Obi Couldn’t Fix Anambra— Oshiomhole, US Will Have To Give Iran The Hammer
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has criticised former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, questioning their capacity to lead Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.
Oshiomhole said Obi failed to address Anambra State’s challenges during his eight years as governor, while predicting that Atiku would return to Dubai after losing the presidential election.
The former Edo State governor made the remarks during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Cross River State, where he urged residents to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Questioning Obi’s promise to govern Nigeria for only four years, Oshiomhole said the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDCa) had not demonstrated the capacity to deliver within that period.
US President Donald Trump on Sunday reiterated his threat to resume strikes against Iran, telling a campaign rally that he may have to give Tehran “the hammer” at some unspecified time.
“And the only reason why I’m not finished with Iran is I want to be nice. I want to try and save all those lives if I can…But at some point we’re going to have to give them the hammer,” the 80-year-old president told supporters during a rally in Iowa ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Troops of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested a suspected kidnapper while attempting to collect a N200,000 ransom from a female resident in Nasarawa State.
The suspect, identified as Mukaila Iliyasu, was arrested at Akwaba in Eggon Local Government Area of the state during a joint security operation conducted by troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke, and DSS personnel.
The arrest followed intelligence reports that Iliyasu had allegedly threatened to abduct a woman unless she paid N200,000.
The Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, disclosed this in a Monday statement, saying the DSS alerted the military to the alleged threat on October 29.
The full list of men’s and women’s FIFPRO World XI nominees has been released.
The list was revealed via a tweet by FIFPRO on Monday.
Featuring a star-studded list of footballers, the men’s category had past Ballon d’Or winners — Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Rodrigo Hernández (Rodri) — and recently awarded Englishman Harry Kane.
The women’s category also listed 26 players, including two three-time Ballon d’Or winners: Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí, alongside another 2018 winner, Ada Hegerberg.
The FIFPRO World XI is unique among major individual football awards because it is voted for exclusively by professional players, who select the team based on the performances of their peers.
Making the list in both categories are 26 players whose combination will culminate in a World XI, from goalkeepers to defenders, midfielders and attackers.
According to the award body, the men’s shortlist was decided by 19,806 professional men’s footballers worldwide, while the women’s was voted by 6,511 professional women’s footballers worldwide.
The Vice-Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Prof. Jonathan Babalola, has described as unfair the Federal Government’s decision not to extend the benefits of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to students and researchers in privately owned universities.
Babalola, who spoke in Iwo on Monday while addressing journalists ahead of activities marking the university’s 21st convocation, said the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of Private Universities had made efforts to convince the Federal Government to extend TETFund and NELFUND support to researchers and students of private universities, respectively.
He, however, said the efforts had not yielded the desired results, urging the Federal Government to recognise the contributions of researchers in private universities to nation-building and provide the necessary support.
The vice-chancellor also argued that students in private universities, like their counterparts in public institutions, deserved to benefit from NELFUND.
