TikTok Video Lands Man in Trouble After Allegedly Targeting Police Commissioner Mkhwanazi
A TikTok video targeting KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has landed a 38-year-old man in police custody after he was accused of insulting the senior officer and encouraging violence.
The man was arrested on Sunday, 1 November 2026, at the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s final election rally held at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the arrest followed an investigation into a video the suspect allegedly posted on his TikTok account.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the provincial task team opened a case after identifying possible criminal elements in the video.
The suspect is facing allegations of crimen injuria, which involves unlawfully damaging another person’s dignity, and incitement to commit violence.
Police reportedly traced the man to the stadium, where thousands of MK Party supporters had gathered for the party’s election rally. Party leader Jacob Zuma also made his first public appearance after being discharged from hospital.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or provided the full details of the video that led to his arrest.
The arrest has also drawn attention to the growing role of social media in public discussions about police conduct and the use of power.
The incident comes at a time when South Africa is preparing for the 2026 local government elections, with law enforcement agencies keeping a close watch on possible threats to public safety.
Netshiunda confirmed that the suspect was expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 November 2026.
The case serves as a reminder that social media users can face legal consequences for posts that allegedly cross the line into criminal conduct. However, the allegations will still need to be tested in court.
