Cyril Ramaphosa and Irvin Khoza Have a Message for SA Football Supporters Ahead of Elections

President Cyril Ramaphosa and Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza have delivered an important message to South African football supporters ahead of the country’s 2026 Local Government Elections.

The two prominent figures discussed football and the upcoming elections during Ramaphosa’s special visit to the PSL, where the importance of participating in the democratic process became a key talking point.

Khoza, who leads South African football’s top professional league, encouraged supporters of the country’s biggest football clubs to take part in Wednesday’s elections.

His message was directed at the broader football community, urging fans to exercise their voting rights and contribute to shaping the country’s future.

The visit also provided an opportunity for Ramaphosa to share a personal football story, with the Soweto Derby featuring prominently in the discussion.

The president reportedly expressed disappointment over missing a major fixture between two of South African football’s fiercest rivals, highlighting his passion for the game.

The Soweto Derby, which brings together Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, remains one of the most anticipated events on the local football calendar.

Ramaphosa’s visit highlighted the connection between football and national life, with both leaders recognising the influence of the sport in bringing South Africans together.

As the country prepares to head to the voting stations, their message serves as a reminder that football supporters also have an important role to play in the democratic process.

The elections are scheduled for Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
