Samuel Osei Anto Christopher arrested in Sakumono double murder case

A 72-year-old man identified as Samuel Osei Anto Christopher has been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of two relatives at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region, following a police manhunt.

The victims have been identified as Irene Atuguba, 47, and her uncle, George Atuguba, 57. They were reportedly killed at their residence in NTHC Estate, Sakumono, on Friday, October 30, 2026.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the suspect was arrested on Sunday, November 1, at a hideout in Tikrom, near Ejisu, following an intelligence-led operation.

During the arrest, police reportedly retrieved a Smith and Wesson pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition from him. The firearm and ammunition have been retained as exhibits to assist investigations.

Preliminary police investigations suggest that the incident may have been triggered by a financial disagreement involving an alleged GHยข500,000 debt between the suspect and George Atuguba.

Police say the suspect allegedly visited the victims’ residence on the morning of October 30, accompanied by a 47-year-old woman identified as Beatrice Mumuni, to demand repayment of the money. A misunderstanding reportedly developed during the encounter, leading to the fatal shooting of George and his niece, Irene.

The two victims were rushed to a hospital after the incident but were pronounced dead by a medical officer. Their bodies were subsequently deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Mumuni had earlier been arrested in connection with the case, with police alleging that she accompanied the suspect to the victims’ residence. Before Christopher’s arrest, the police had declared him wanted and announced a GHยข100,000 reward for credible information that would lead to his capture.

His arrest means that the two individuals publicly identified by police in connection with the incident are now in custody as investigations continue.

The police have said the suspect is assisting with investigations. Authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killings and gather further evidence for possible prosecution.

The suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
