SA responds to notice of removal from AGOA

In reaction to the United States’ announcement that it’s moving to terminate South Africa from its AGOA trade preference programme, the South African government says it recognises the concerns the decision may cause.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, says government will continue to accelerate the diversification of South Africa’s export markets to protect jobs.

He says South Africa is pursuing opportunities across the African continent, India, the European Union and China amongst others.

New markets have also been secured for South African fruit exporters.

He added that although AGOA remains important to South Africa, it does not constitute the totality of the economic relationship between South Africa and the United States.
