Ramaphosa Warns ANC Mayors and Councillors They Will Lose Their Jobs if They Fail to Deliver

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned African National Congress (ANC) councillors and mayors that they risk losing their positions if they fail to serve communities or misuse public money.

Speaking at the ANC’s final election rally at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, Ramaphosa said the party would not protect leaders who failed to meet their responsibilities.

He said the ANC wanted capable, honest and accountable people who understood that being elected into public office was about serving communities.

Ramaphosa stressed that political positions should not be treated as an opportunity to gain wealth, popularity or personal benefits. Instead, councillors and mayors should focus on improving the lives of residents.

He warned that officials who neglected their duties or became involved in stealing public funds would be removed.

The president also said ANC representatives would be expected to report on their performance and show progress during their first 100 days in office.

Service delivery remains one of the biggest challenges facing many municipalities across South Africa. Residents in several communities continue to raise concerns about water shortages, poor roads, damaged infrastructure and other basic services.

Ramaphosa said municipalities needed to work closely with provincial and national government to address these problems.

He also called on local leaders to maintain infrastructure, support businesses and create opportunities for young people and women.

During his address, Ramaphosa defended the ANC’s record in government, pointing to the country’s progress in ending load-shedding. He said the government had also taken steps to respond to the rising cost of living, including recent fuel price relief.

His warning comes as political parties prepare for the local government elections, with service delivery and municipal accountability among the key issues facing voters.

Ramaphosa urged ANC supporters to continue campaigning and encourage South Africans to vote.

He said the party wanted leaders who would be judged by their work and commitment to the communities they serve.
