Ramaphosa and Orlando Pirates Boss Send Strong Message to Football Supporters
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza have called on South Africans, particularly football supporters, to take part in the upcoming local government elections.
The two leaders made the appeal during Ramaphosa’s visit to the PSL offices on Monday, 2 November 2026, ahead of Wednesday’s elections.
Ramaphosa encouraged registered voters to use their votes to help improve their communities. He said people should not stay away from elections because voting gives citizens a chance to influence how their municipalities are run.
The president warned that choosing not to vote means giving up an important responsibility as a citizen.
Khoza shared the same message and urged football supporters across the country to visit voting stations in large numbers.
He said residents should not complain about poor facilities and services if they do not take part in choosing the people responsible for running their municipalities.
Khoza also said voting in large numbers would help strengthen democracy and give the election process more credibility. He added that he planned to be among the first people to cast his vote.
The PSL chairman encouraged football clubs and their supporters to use their influence to promote voter participation.
During the visit, Ramaphosa also spoke about the role of football in bringing South Africans together. He praised the PSL for its organisation, describing it as one of the best-run football leagues on the continent.
The president also shared his disappointment at missing the recent Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. He explained that he arrived in South Africa shortly after the match had started.
With local elections approaching, both Ramaphosa and Khoza believe that citizens have an important role to play in deciding the future of their communities.
Their message is clear: South Africans should not only demand better services but should also take part in the voting process that determines local leadership.
