Putin Finally Agrees – No More Ghanaians For Ukraine War

Russian President Vladimir Putin has assured President John Mahama that Ghanaians will no longer be recruited to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this on Monday, November 2, 2026.

According to the Ministry, the promise was made during direct talks between President Mahama and President Putin on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Summit held in Moscow from October 28 to 29, 2026.

This comes after reports that many Ghanaians had been recruited to fight in the war. Some reports say about 272 Ghanaians were recruited, with 55 dead. Many families back home have been crying for help.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said President Mahama raised the concern strongly in the meeting.

“Ghanaians are no longer allowed to participate in the war with Ukraine. This policy applies to all circumstances whether through irregular recruitments or expression of voluntary interests.” – Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement

It means whether someone was tricked or went by himself to join, Russia says it will no longer accept Ghanaians to fight.

The meeting secured 6 big commitments for Ghana:

Russia will help Ghana build a 2,000 megawatts nuclear power plant

A new defence pact to give Ghana Armed Forces strategic military assets

More support for agriculture – grain production and fertilizers

More scholarships for Ghanaian students in Russia

Stop recruiting Ghanaians for the Ukraine war

Revive the Ghana-Russia Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation

For many Ghanaians, number 5 is the most important. No parent wants to hear their child died in a foreign war.

Now Ghanaians will watch to see if Russia will keep this promise.
