Mum of 22 Year Old Trapped Under Eastleigh Rubble For Nine Days Shares Unexpected Update
Jude Rose Wanjiru, a mother from Kangema in Murang’a County, is anxiously waiting for news about her 22 year old daughter, Aurelia Wanjiku, who went missing following the collapse of an 18 storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
Wanjiru travelled to the city after learning that her daughter could have been caught up in the disaster. She has since spent several days at the scene, hoping that rescue workers will find Aurelia alive.
The family received an unexpected development on Saturday morning when Aurelia’s sister attempted to reach her through her Airtel number. After several days without a response, the call went through and someone answered.
According to Wanjiru, her daughter appeared to pick up the call, but communication was difficult because she seemed unable to hear the person speaking to her.
The development prompted the family to alert officials involved in the ongoing search operation. The information was also forwarded to detectives, who were expected to investigate the phone signal and establish where it was coming from.
For the family, the incident has brought renewed attention to the possibility that Aurelia could still be somewhere beneath the collapsed structure. However, there has been no official confirmation that the person who answered the call was indeed the missing woman.
Wanjiru’s search for her daughter has been emotionally challenging. She previously disclosed that the family had received information about a woman being recovered from the debris. Relatives went to the City Mortuary to establish whether she was Aurelia, only to discover that the deceased person was someone else.
Meanwhile, the rescue operation at the Eastleigh site has continued as authorities work to account for those who remain missing. According to information shared by the rescue team, approximately 90 per cent of the debris removal exercise had been completed, while 16 people were still unaccounted for.
The remaining section of the building has remained a major focus of the operation as rescuers work to establish whether more victims could be found.
As families continue waiting for answers, Wanjiru remains hopeful that the latest development involving her daughter’s phone will provide useful leads.
For now, the family is relying on the ongoing investigations and rescue efforts as it waits for confirmation about Aurelia’s whereabouts.
