Kwankwaso Reveals the One Reason He Abandoned His Presidential Ambition for Peter Obi
According to a report by Daily Post on Monday November 02, 2026, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, has explained why he stepped aside from his presidential ambition to support Peter Obi, arguing that the former Anambra State governor should be allowed to complete the South’s turn in Nigeria’s presidency.
Kwankwaso said his decision was based on his confidence in Obi’s credibility and his belief that the presidency should fairly rotate between the country’s northern and southern regions.
Speaking to journalists at his residence in Kano on Sunday, the former Kano State governor urged Nigerians to support Obi, insisting that the South deserved the opportunity to produce the country’s leader.
“I made a sacrifice for Peter Obi because he is credible and from the South. We have the same goals and beliefs. We are strong and can easily handle the country’s affairs,” Kwankwaso said.
He disclosed that he had contested the presidency three consecutive times but decided to put his ambition aside to give Obi the opportunity to represent the South.
The Kwankwasiyya movement leader maintained that his decision was guided by the need to promote fairness and balance in the country’s political arrangement.
According to him, allowing Obi to lead would reflect the principle of equitable power rotation and give the South its opportunity to occupy the nation’s highest political office.
Kwankwaso’s remarks come as the two politicians align under the NDC ahead of the next presidential election, with the former governor presenting his support for Obi as a deliberate choice in the interest of regional fairness and shared political objectives.
