Early Birds Strike Digital Gold as Accra Mayor Turns Punctuality Into Prize

The Accra Mayor, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has rewarded 20 Accra Metropolitan Assembly staff with AI-powered smartwatches and mobile phones for consistently reporting to work before 8:00am. The gesture, which forms part of efforts to instil discipline and boost productivity within the Assembly, has sparked both admiration and quiet reflection among workers.

The lucky staff were selected after a monitoring exercise tracked arrival times over a sustained period. Those who consistently beat the 8:00am mark were singled out for recognition, receiving the devices as tokens of appreciation for their commitment to duty.

Presenting the items, the Mayor noted that punctuality remains a cornerstone of effective public service delivery. He explained that the AI-powered gadgets are not merely gifts but tools meant to enhance efficiency, communication, and time management among the recipients. He urged other staff to emulate the awardees, stressing that dedication and discipline will not go unrewarded.

Recipients expressed delight at the recognition, describing the awards as motivation to sustain their good habits. Some colleagues, however, were seen casting envious glances, with murmurs that the early morning race to the office may now become even more competitive.

The initiative has drawn mixed reactions from the public. While some praised the Assembly for creatively rewarding diligence, others questioned whether material incentives alone can cure the broader challenge of lateness in public institutions. Critics argued that systemic issues such as transport difficulties and inadequate working conditions also contribute to poor punctuality.

The Assembly has indicated that the reward scheme will be reviewed periodically, with plans to expand recognition to other categories of staff who demonstrate excellence. The Mayor assured workers that more initiatives aimed at improving morale and service delivery are in the pipeline.

For the 20 awardees, the smartwatches and phones are more than gadgets. They are badges of honour in a city office where arriving before eight has suddenly become a worthy contest, and where every minute before the clock strikes may now carry a prize.
