BREAKING: Bandits Open Fire On Police Officers Travelling For Special Duty

Suspected bandits have reportedly killed some Nigerian police officers after attacking a vehicle conveying them from Sokoto State to Zamfara State for a special duty assignment.

The officers were reportedly ambushed on Monday while travelling to Zamfara for the assignment.

However, details of the attack, including the number of personnel killed and whether any officers survived, remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

Video obtained after the incident showed the lifeless bodies of some of the officers inside a bus, with their hands and legs apparently tied with ropes.

Other images showed the officers’ personal belongings scattered on the ground as people gathered at the scene. The vehicle conveying the personnel was also seen with visible bloodstains.

The attack comes amid persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups have continued to launch deadly assaults on communities, ambush travellers and abduct residents for ransom.

Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina and Kaduna states are among the states in the region that have continued to experience attacks by armed groups.

In a related development, the Zamfara State Police Command on Saturday announced that security operatives had repelled an attempted attack by bandits on Bukuyum town in Bukuyum Local Government Area.

The Command also disclosed that more than 30 bodies, suspected to be those of neutralised bandits, had been discovered in surrounding farmlands following the confrontation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

According to the statement, the ongoing clearance operation began on October 28 after armed bandits attempted to attack the community.

Politics Nigeria reports that the police said operatives, working alongside local civil security outfits, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and prevented them from gaining access to the town.

The Command said the discovery of more than 30 suspected bandit bodies suggested that the attackers might have suffered significant casualties.

However, it cautioned that the actual number of casualties had yet to be established, noting that armed bandits often evacuate their dead and injured from battle locations.

The police added that the successful defence of the community prevented possible loss of lives, destruction of property and further displacement of residents.

It further said preliminary security assessments indicated that sustained operational pressure had forced some of the remaining armed groups to flee the state.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the clearance operations alongside other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to eliminate criminal elements and restore public confidence.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has concluded a five-day Election Security Management Training Programme aimed at preparing personnel for election-related duties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The programme, organised in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), ended on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as part of the first phase of a nationwide initiative to train 10,000 police officers across 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

At the commencement of the training, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, charged officers expected to be deployed for election duties to remain neutral, professional and accountable.

He urged them to protect voters, electoral officials and the electoral process without fear or favour.

The training covered election security management, electoral laws, strategic communication, intelligence-led operations, threat assessment and the statutory responsibilities of the police.

It also emphasised legality, impartiality and collaboration among security agencies in preparation for electoral assignments, including the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, the course representative thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the NPTF for providing the opportunity, while commending the facilitators for combining professional expertise with practical experience.

The representative said participants were committed to applying the knowledge acquired in their respective commands and formations to protect voters’ rights and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
