Why Ruto Is Keen to Win Kalonzo’s Support Ahead of the 2027 Elections

During his four-day development tour of Ukambani, Ruto made several remarks that appeared to target the former Vice President, urging him to abandon his presidential ambitions and support his second-term bid.

Speaking in Mwingi, Kitui County, on October 26, 2026, Ruto reminded Kalonzo of their political history, saying he had supported him during the 1992 General Election when he contested the Mwingi North parliamentary seat.

The President challenged Kalonzo to return the favour by supporting his 2027 presidential campaign. “Now tell him to remember me next year. Let him return the favour,” Ruto said while addressing residents.

It could also weaken efforts by opposition leaders to unite behind one presidential candidate.

However, political analysts warn that securing Kalonzo’s support does not automatically mean that all his supporters would vote for Ruto.

Kalonzo has maintained his opposition position and is among the leaders seeking to build a strong coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Wiper leader has also previously declared his intention to contest for the presidency. The growing political attention surrounding Kalonzo shows how important his decision could become as both sides position themselves for the next General Election.
