End of the Escarpment Nightmare: Why Motorists Are Celebrating the Naivasha Stretch Rollout
In a major development for millions of motorists and freight operators traversing Kenya’s busiest transit corridor, the government has officially signaled the opening of the upgraded Rironi–Naivasha four-lane dual carriageway.
The critical stretch part of the larger KSh 183 billion Rironi–Mau Summit highway project executed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is designed to permanently eliminate the chronic traffic gridlocks that have long paralyzed the Rift Valley escarpment.
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir confirmed that opening the four-lane Naivasha section ahead of the wider corridor’s June 2027 completion target provides immediate operational relief to long-distance commuters, haulage firms, and weekend travelers heading toward Nakuru and Western Kenya.
For years, the narrow, two-lane Rironi–Naivasha highway served as a nightmare bottleneck. A single stalled heavy truck on the steep escarpment inclines routinely triggered gridlocks lasting anywhere from four to twelve hours, stranding passenger buses, fresh agricultural produce, and cross-border cargo bound for Uganda and Rwanda.
“Expanding this section from two to four lanes fundamentally alters the transit arithmetic of the Northern Corridor,” observed an infrastructure analyst. “It unblocks the primary bottleneck connecting the capital to western economic hubs.”
While commuters celebrate the immediate time savings, attention is turning toward the highway’s long-term framework. Implemented under a public-private partnership model, the route will eventually operate as a toll road, with proposed tariffs expected to average around KSh 8 per kilometer to recover capital investment.
As motorists test out the newly opened dual carriageway, the seamless flow of traffic signals a major victory for the state’s infrastructure agenda turning one of Kenya’s most infamous bottlenecks into an efficient gateway to the West.
